-hi, my old computer has a virus. it hasnt been used for a few years and is in need of upgrading. what parts in the computer can hold a virus? i know the HDD is infected so that will be replaced. also i will upgrade the RAM (i know the RAM cant hold a virus). but can anything else be infected that needs to be changed? it is old and will only be used for office work now, so i dont need anything fancy in it. thanks for any help!!It's worth doing a scan with malwarebytes before anything else. http://malwarebytes.org
You could also scan with adaware from lavasoft and spybot search and destroy, all the above are quality programmes and free. I would finish off with a registry clean using ccleaner. (just google them)
In most cases, you'll find that you don't have a virus, but have some kind of malware which the above will clear for you. Failing those, you could download an antivirus programme for free such as avira, but certainly run malwarebytes first.
Another option is to re-install the operating system.
If you are running Windows I have three solid virus protectors.
Microsoft Security Essentials (free)

Avast Free
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
Avira Free
http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus
A good antivirus program is "Microsoft security essentials" download that and scan your computer immediately, oh and it's FREE
If your replacing the most essential hardware then you have nothing to worry about.
scan with avg or avast
If the HDD is functioning, then it's you preference to replace it.
But THEN, your going to have to install a operating system.
Which it already has, only it needs help removing the bug.
I suggest following these procedures for virus removal.
I would print this as fast as you can!
STALKERS are following my answers and FALSELY reporting them to Yahoo!
