Webroot wants me to try out their new beta software?

-I have had Webroot antivirus/antispyware software for about 3 years. Yesterday I got a request/offer from them to try out/assess their new beta software and they would add 3 months to my current membership. I don't know if the hassle involved would be worth the 3 months free. Can there be problems associated with new beta software that I could incur. As the above answerer said, it is a compliment, but beta testing is best left to experienced users.

So you be the judge of your own skill level; but betas aren't ready for public release, and they can be *quite* buggy.

If you keep all of your files backed up and are able to recover from a disaster (I'm not saying that it will happen - just that it could), then go for it.

But if a major malfunction is going to overwhelm you (again I'm not saying that it is going to happen, just that it could) - don't do it.You must know in the future that being asked to beta test by a product manufacturer directly is a compliment to you and your good feedback and reputation.

I have been creating a good reputation among software applications for years through my blogging and more. I mostly accept any invitation to beta test knowing there might be unexpected results not usually acquainted in the application. However, if you are worried about it putting your computer in jeopardy, don't be. These app creators absolutely do not want to damage the consumer's hardware.

GO FOR IT.
i only use the windows washer and the rest of my protection is free and it is just as good here is a link to a cool site

Why is the security code on my debit card says it's invalid on my app store on my iPhone?

-It used to be okay when I put the security code to buy something on my iPhone but now it say my security code is invalidIt's only the last 3 numbers not all 7...
many debit cards can't be used for online purchases. You need a credit card of visa debit

Verichip? What is it? Will I have to get it over time?

-Ok I've been trying to research this thing and I cant get a stright anwser on it.

Is it implanted in you right arm or right hand or forehead

Will we all have to get it or is it optional

Any extra info will be great.

I have windows xp and I wanted to know, how do I get rid of a computer virus?

-Such as trojans, spyware and Warnings such as Attention:Danger pop up and it starts listing the cons of the having a computer virus.go to microsoft and run your computer through there scan. Sometimes that will do the trick and get rid of it. If no you save what's not infected and re=format you c drive and start over. Oh man I just hate doing this.

I have used a web site I yogi you pay for them but there good and they will spend house fixing all your problems. Cost was I think 125.00

Hey good luck. I been in your shoes.
Do a full system scan from a good antivirus. Free ones like avast will do.

http://www.avast.com/download-thank-you.php?src=http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe&product=FA&page=free-antivirus-download&locale=en-ww&avast=0

OR you may try some trials like that of kaspersky. (Personally will go for a trial version of kaspersky as it performs a preinstallation scan.)

You install them, do a full system scan and then delete or disinfect files. After this some files may go missing so have them replaced. These are generally .exe (executables) since they also had been affected. Simply reinstall and you're good to go.
Install a good antimalware program.. I am using Scanspyware and Malwarebytes for this purpose...

You can also try them..
Install a good anti-virus software. If you think your computer is damaged beyond repair, you could re-install your operating system with the CD's you were given when you purchased it.
I can't imagine there is any program on Earth for that.

What other security software you have besides AntiVirus?

-web of trust and malwarebytes and superantispyware all are very good and free get at cnet.comsecunia.com

this program makes sure your security and downloads are complete.

when i ran it on my computer it found 97 incomplete security updates and patched what it could and prompts to update the ones it can't. links included. :)

good luck!

What kind of security system do I need?

-I am having trouble with my step-son coming to our house when I am out of town and going through things. I know that things are out of order but he denies that he goes through things.

I was wondering what kind of video surveillance system I need to monitor my house. I want it wireless, only to record when it detects motion, and save it to an SD card or something similar.

Links to products would be great or if you have any personal experiences with products. Thanks! If you want to save a lot of extra money, go by you a baby monitor with a small tv and camera and hide it somewhere and it's so much cheaper. Plus it picks up every sound, because its meant for babies. They're very small and have night vision, my friends father used to use them for around the outside of the house in windows and you can easily just put them inside a stuffed animal or something.

How do I get my e mail from one comuter to another?

-I am staying in a differeant location from my home computer and want to get to my e mail? With most email services (Yahoo, Google, Etc..) You can log into your Email on a difrent computer. The Emails are not usally saved on your computer, they are saved on the email server. If you have the emails in document form, you can get a CD, DVD, Or Portable Memory device (Flash Drive, or External Hardrive) and save the documents on it. And you can then put them on a difrent computer.

What antivirus is the best?

-Kaspersky, McAfee, BitDefender?kaspersky. its the best!

never had a virus that could get through it :)Kaspersky is the best antivirus among your specified options. I personally recommend you AVG Internet security. Kaspersky uses much system resources which may slow down your PC. AVG gives you a full PC protection but uses less resources. So choose your best
In my personal experience, Trend Micro is great, McAfee is not to be trusted, and Norton is extremely better than they used to be. I use norton now and it uses less memory in the background than micro did, and i haven't had a single issue in the last 2 years of having norton.

How does frostwire work? and how so i stay safe?

-okay, so i want to update my ipod but my brother used to always do it for me and i want to do it myself. Is frost wire legal? and safe for your computer? also how do i set it so i can get the music i want, but no one can look at whats in my computer or on my music files. Also what is leeching? it says that if u dont seed trackers may penilize you. what does this mean? please help!Peer-to-peer means a coordinating service (Frostwire) has it's clients (you and anyone else who 'joins') open their computers (perhaps specific files), and those clients upload what they have (called 'seeders') to go to the other clients as a download (called 'leechers').

This technique means that leechers get whatever is uploaded: good or evil. You have no way of telling what you're getting until it's "on board".

Not a great idea, since it can be anyone who joins the pool, and about half the 'Net is evil; half is good, and the other 10% use Linux.

My computer keeps coming up with "Windows 7 security" and won't let me do anything?

-My stupid computer won't let me do anything because of the Windows 7 securty. I even paid for the subscription, but it still doesn't work.Uhh bad news, but you just got ripped off. That's a virus that parades as a fake antivirus program just to trick you into paying. Take your computer to a qualified technician (just not the geek squad lol)If you can provide more details I might be able to help. Windows 7 has stronger baseline security than previous versions of Windows. It could be that you are not running with an Administrator account. Even if you are, some operations require that you right-click the icon and select, "Run as Administrator".

You got ripped of its a milicious scam that just takes your cash, securety essentuals is FREE no matter what your PC or LapTop tells you, try this it worked for me when I got this b***.

Try downloading milwarebytes. However it might download but not work as the virus may stop it. If its stopped download rkill. It has several .exe ext, one of them will normally work, and they shall shut down nearly every nonessential program... hopefully the virus included. The Milwarebytes should work, scan your computer and it should find the b**** virus that got you. Then destroy it.

Or you could just entire safe mode (reset PC LapTop and keep pressing... F8/F11 I cant remember which. Anyway it should give you the option to enter safe mode, and the malicious software shouldn't run so you can download Milwarebytes and run it.

Can malware, in a sandbox, send information from your PC to the malware author's PC?

-No, That's the idea of a sand box. Once it's in the sand box it can't execute because it's a virtual copy of your running system. It's trapped. Dump the sand box. It's like nothing ever happened. Simply put, Mal ware cannot execute on a virtual copy. Which is what a sand box program does. It makes a virtual copy of your running system. When the malware try's to attach its self it can't. It's kinda like you trying to grab a ghost. It ain't gonna happen. No, That's the idea of a sand box. Once it's in the sand box it can't execute because it's a virtual copy of your running system. If you setup a virtual PC, but don't give it access to the internet then it can't send information out.

If you have have a virtual PC with access to the internet but don't share your C drive with the VPC, then the malware can only send information about the Virtual PC. It won't have access to the information about your machine.
Yes. The point of Malware is to steal information from you.

Did a Windows 7 Virus scan pop up yesterday or earlier today and tell you had to perform a scan? Did it then tell you you need to buy an Antivirus upgrade for about 70 dollars? Did it all look very real, very Microsoft? My computer picked up a virus last month that did all this. You have described the same virus I picked up. I had to bring my machine in for some professional help.
THIS IS A VIRUS.... DO NOT CLICK IT.........

Load up in safe mode and download Spybot search and destroy(it's free) Then do a scan and it will remove it...........

How to prevent people hacking into your hotmail../?

-I just got my account back. It had been blocked because I had been sending a lot of junk mail, even though it wasn't me who sent them. They were from foreign countrys. They sent it to people who are not my contacts.

How did they hack into my account and also how do I prevent it happening again?Well first off change your password. When signed into hotmail click options in the top right hand corner and select more options the click on both "Email forwarding" and "Sending automated vacation replies" and make sure there is no other email address that your mail is being forwarded to.

Also download malwarebytes and scan your computer with it.(It's free)

http://www.malwarebytes.org/ And again lastly use a strong password and don't open or reply to any junk mail. This is a common problem. Often times, webmail accounts get hacked because people use the same passwords for almost everything they do on the Internet; or there is enough information available for people to accurately guess the answer to your challenge questions in order to have the sites reset your password after clicking the "Forgot password" like.

You can prevent that from happening by using an application like Keepass to store all of your passwords, and then make sure your passwords are fairly strong and that you don't use them for other sites. The second thing you can do is to create fake answers to the challenge questions. Something like, "Where did you graduate high school?" Your answer: Joe F. Mama HS. It needs to be something you'll remember. You could even write it down and stick it to your monitor since other people would just think you were being funny. That way, when your personal information leaks out on the Internet (and it inevitably will), it can't be used against you in that fashion.

Of course, some of these security breaches are due to less than stellar security on the part of the webmail sites themselves. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about those.

Update: Hotmail announced today that they are banning weak passwords (stuff like: password, qwerty, 123456, iloveyou, etc). This is the sort of thing I was referring to when I mentioned less than stellar security on the part of the providers.
How can you're account have been compromised?

1) Password might have been way too weak and easy to guess you should always have a very strong password mixed case 20-48 characters and changed every few weeks:

https://secure.pctools.com/guides/passwo鈥?/a>

2) Password got sniffed

3) Password was written down and someone found it

4) The Attacker had a key logger installed on you're computer and found it that way (key logger monitors you're key strokes)

5) Phishing fake hotmail site that tricks you into typing you're login name and details

6) You were infected with spyware scan you're computer
Run frequent scans on your computer and delete your Computer's Cookies very often. You can also download:

SPY BOT S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index鈥?/a>

And run the immunizer. It will protect your internet browser from hackers and viruses.

You can also contact the Email company and ask them about ways to protect your email further. Try not to open emails from things you did not sign up for and don't open attatchments without scanning them with an Anti virus.

Is LastPass really that safe?

-I wan't to try LastPass ( https://lastpass.com/ ) so I just want to hear your opinion about it.The only reason I want it is because it works with pretty much all browsers and platforms and it makes the login pretty much automatic.I really dont find it any more secure than just using a password generator and let the Chrome and Firefox remember the passwords automatically. In fact when you use it you are placing all your passwords in one place so if someone cracks your lastpass password they get all your passwords.

I know I'm probably wrong so can you just explain me why is it safer than just using random password generator and letting browsers remember all the passwords? The reason why lastpass is safe because the password that saves in the browser are very easy to see u dnt even need to write a code for it, just about 8-10 clicks get you there for all browsers. With lastpass u have to log in and then enter the password again just to see the credentials. when log in into a website you cannot copy the actual password u see in the password field.

The Lastpass Program can be set up to how secure you want it, so even if they get the master password, there are other sets that need to be done before the person can even perform the search for credentials. i think u need to read more about its feature more and then you might look on it another way.

If you still have concerns about lastpass, just remember not to save your main and most valuable credentials. eg. the password for your email account u that u sign up lastpass with. Bank accounts and such for.

Lastpass also has fill forms and secure note, that help you fill out things faster and you can always define as many fill form u want and fields to enter into.

To me LastPass is a great programI am not impressed with most sites but this one I am...web of trust says excellent ratings...and from the user's comments...there all positive...so with that said...I believe this to be a Safe site...

If a keylogger gets on your computer can it see past passwords put on it or just ones entered after?

-if a keylogger gets on your computer can it see past passwords put on the computer or just ones entered after the keylogger got on the computer?A simple keylogger program intercepts your keystrokes as you type them into your computer, so it will only be able to see and record what you directly type after the keylogger was installed. However, if your computer is infected, be wary for other more complex spyware or viruses at play, too.
Just the ones after you enter
after

How To Hack Windows 7 Account?(VERY Important)?

-Hi,

So I'm on summer break and I have two or three free weeks where I will have lots of time a home. The problem is that I don't have much to do. I've watched all my movies, tv. Etc. I've read all my books and so on, and I have some projects I need to work on on my computer. The problem is that a few months ago, my mom changed the password on my account on Windows7 (I'm an administrator account and my computer is a PC). My parents are unable to unlock it for me until late evening.

I need to be able to get on my account with out any downloads, discs or anything. Is there a hack I can use? (I have decent computer skills).

If not, is there a way that when I get onto the unlocked computer that I can learn and or change the password?

Thanks,

=^3^=If you don't know the admin password, you can't get on. You will have to wait for your parents because they are technically the ones with the admin rights.
if you are the administrator you should have access

and your computer is a pc

all computers are PCs (personal computers)
none that i know of but you can try reinstalling windows.
Retrieving the password is difficult... it involves rainbow tables or lophtcrack with syskey and registry dumps - way beyond your 'decent skills'. Even with access to the account, you can not retrieve the initial password, you can only CHANGE it to a new one, which is not what you want.

Without access to the account, you can reset the password using Offline NT Password Editor (see link) but that will also erase the current password and allow you to set another, after which your parents will undoubtedly find out that you've tampered with the account.
Ryan - that won't work because we need to have admin rights to get in or change admin password. If you don't have admin right using cmd then you will get a message saying this "System error锘?5 has occured, access is denied.". This is due to not right-clicking cmd and clicking on 'Run as administrator' before using cmd and if you are not the admin, it won't allow you.

Sorry there is no way of getting in without using software and not using Windows DVD disc. You are going to have to brush up your grovelling skills, better start practising in front of the mirror.

EDIT: Butch Broo and Rou Zjai. You can't get in to change the password if you haven't made a password reset disk before it happened...and no you can't make one from another computer to use it on yours. It's only valid on the account you created it from.

EDIT: Ryan, read his question "The problem is that a few months ago, my mom changed the password on my account on Windows7 (I'm an administrator account and my computer is a PC). My parents are unable to unlock it for me until late evening. " therefore looks like he's not the admin, his parents are.

Do I disable windows defender to install microsoft security essentials?

-That's the whole question. Do I disable Windows Defender to install Security Essentials antivirus?Sandy Is 100% correct. I use MSE on all my computers and install it on all pc's that I repair. Since MSE is a antimalware app also, by default, MSE disables Windows Defender and is no longer needed.
@ Sandy are u sure??

AFAIK MSE and WD both do different thing so i don't beleave MSE will disable WD when it is installed. and there is no need to disable WD while installing MSE. Both can be run together.

PS: i don't have MSE or WD. Disabled WD long time ago.

Yahoo say that my password has been compromised How do I verify this message?

-I have just received what seems to be a valid message from Yahoo to say that my password is being compromised, and ways of changing it. I don't seem to have any problems at the moment. Is this a scam of some sort. How can I check?Right click on the email message and select on the drop down menu for the "View Full Header" In there you will see a bunch of text and coding, but it will show you who actually sent the email, their server, the time zone they are in and the if it was sent from an actual web based email like yahoo, gmail and hotmail or if its from an ISP email that you would use only from home like from outlook express, eudora or mozilla thunderbird. if it was sent from yahoo, it would be web based and show "Http: ". That's the best way to verify the origins of that email. And you can do it on your own without the help of any tech support and not to mention this applies to any email provider you use. It's a scam to get details of your user name and password.

Yahoo like everyone else DO NOT send emails asking for password details etc.

Just ignore it and delete it.

Any problems with user names and passwords YOU email Yahoo.
If you got the message in an email, it's a phishing scam. I've got them from Yahoo, and also Hotmail. I just delete the msgs. My password has never been compromised.
Dont click on any links in the email and change it via a new page. That way if your password has been compromised you've changed it without going through their scam email.
Yes it's a scam. The baddies want you to give them your log in and password.
just change your yahoo password. If it's legit you fixed the issue. If it's not then no harm done either way

Free Virus-Protection Programs?

-Are there any free Virus Protection Programs?Avast is good. I personally use it and recommend it. Have never had a virus on my computer in 5 years.

There is also Microsoft Security Essentials which is not bad either. I've never used it because I don't need it with Avast, but you can always download both and decided later which one you prefer, since they are free, of course. :)
If you want free then I recommend Avast , superantispyware and Malwarebytes. coupled with Comodo firewall They are all free for personal use . It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.
Avast anti-virus would be the best program to use, if your lucky you can find a fully cracked program. i myself use linux so i dont get viruses on my computer.. but good luck tho.

here is two of the sites to download it for free:

Viruses are very harmful rouge programs that are put on a person's computer. It cna be added just by going on a website that is unsafe. Contrary to common belief, you don't have to dowloand anything to get a virus. You just have to download a cookie or cache from the site. Viruses can cause permanent damage to your home computer. They can also take vital information and passwords from your computer. The worst viruses will take money from virtual banknig programs. They will also take credit cards information from your virtual banking accounts or orders from websites. When a virus is on your computer, you are going to be scared the first time. SAVE ALL IMPORTANT DATA BEFORE USING THAT METHOD. THAT INCLUDE DOCUMENTS, PICTURES, VIDEOS, PROGRAMS, GAMES.

Virus Removal When removing viruses, be careful. This may sound funny, but some viruses get stronger as you try to delete them. I know, it sounds weird, but it is true.

Here are a few tips for virus removal:

1. If you don't feel comfortable, take your computer into Best buy or your local computer repair shop.

2. Always have a second option. Never assume your computer is just broken. You can always fix it.

3. Never underestimate a virus. Don't assume that you can just let your computer sit there while a virus in on it. You need to take immediate action to defend your system.

4. Never use the System Restore option. The virus can attach itself to your restore points, making your attempts useless.

How to remove:

Save any pictures, Documents, Videos, Games, Or any important saved data.

You may have to go to Best buy or Staples to buy back up CDs or DVDs. If you have too much data, think about investing in a External Hard drive. These are expensive, but useful for backing up data.

First, I will tell you how to fix the most common side-effects with viruses/malware.

One of the worst side effects is missing icons. Adware viruses commonly hide the icons on your computer to make it seems as if you have a virus. Therefor you buy their fake anti virus program.

How to restore icons/folders:

Step 1: Go to the Windows Control Panel

Step 2: Go to "Folder Options" and you will see a tab that says "View" Click on it.

Step 3: In the view tab, you should see something that says "Show Hidden Files and Folders". Doing this will restore all icons, photos, videos, documents, etc... to your computer. If you still do not see them, seek a computer professional. (Mike S.)

Complete virus removal and cleansing:

Step 1: Start your computer in "Safe Mode with networking" By doing this you are starting the computer with only core drivers and necessary data to run Windows. The virus should not pop up. To get into Safe mode, Turn your PC off and tap F8 while it is booting up.

Step 2: Download one or 2 of the following programs.

I would suggest you use both SPYBOT S&D and Microsoft security essentials. You need a real-time scanner and a prompted scanner

List of free safe antivirus/Malware software:

1. SPY BOT S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index鈥?/a>

2. Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/

4. Microsoft security essentials: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_鈥?/a>

5. Microsoft Security essential standalone sweeper: http://connect.microsoft.com/systemsweep鈥?/a>

Step 3: Run a virus scan with the anti-virus or Malware Remover. This will take anywhere from 10 minutes to a few hours. It is all worth it at the end.

Step 4: If it detects viruses, remove the ones it tells you you have. You will have to restart your computer at this point.

If worse comes to worse:

You have three options when all else fails...

1. Buy a new computer

2. Reinstall Windows

3. Have it fixed by a professional

I will teach you how to do option 2.

Option 2 is the last option. Please, Back up all important data before reinstall windows.

How do I set a password on my computer?

-I have a windows vista computer. I really want to set up a password on it, so that every time i open it after it rests for a while (every time I open it after the yellow light changes to green...) I have to type in a password. How do I do this?1. Open the Control Panel (All Items View).

2. Click on the User Accounts icon.

3. Click on the Create a password for your account link.

4. Type in a New password.

5. Type in the same password again to Confirm new password.

6. If you want a password hint, Type a password hint in. If you do not want a password hint, then you can skip that field. Remember that anyone using the computer will be able to see the password hint.

7. Click on the Create Password button.

8. Your User Account is now Password protected. (See screenshot below)

Also, make sure you use a strong password. Strong password guidelines:

http://deletemalware.blogspot.com/2011/0鈥?/a>
I think it's impossible to hav a password on a windows computer. But if it is possible, u would probobly hav to be an admin. If u r the admin then go to admin settings. It will be in secruity. Usually if u hav a password it will only work if ur computer either went to sleep or is logged off

Hope this helps.
Start off by getting rid of vista its basically Microsofts virus testing OS lol but really it fails
Control Panel > Add or remove accounts > User accounts > Manage accounts.

Click your account and set the pass ..

go to the program directory and find the IE folder. Open it and double click on the .exe file. If IE opens up you have malware on your computer and this has changed you file associations and has altered the Windows Registry file. If you can't find the one for IE find another folder and try that one.
download malwarebytes. its a free anti virus and scanner. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ if you can't go to the web site cause it blocks IE hold down ctrl + alt + delete and release open task manager and end the processes that it might be. it could be like fakescanner.exe thats just a example. then go to IE and get http://www.malwarebytes.org/ install it and have it scan.

Does this happen to everyone the computer keeps shutting down saying it`s to protect from something or other?

-i think it is windows that do it. It comes straight back on and says data protection and attempts at malicious add ons. i don`t understand. I have good norton protection is that enough?omg thar in trouble there lass, i ditched that norton 2 year ago, they charge you too took me ages to get my money back, you want one of them free ones Avast's ok or windows own anyhow give it a good scan and clean up for now be a virus owing to all them strange sites you visit xx Pops ...Sounds like the "DEP" is blocking something from inserting code into the system files, from an 'illegal' operation.

What browser are you using; and have you added anything new, like games, lately?
i agree with 'pops' he got mine put right but its microsofts own. you want.!
Yes. And it is happening very frequently with windows.
I'm ready to toss this computer into the lake out back....(Firefox too)......!!

What is the best anti-virus protection?

-I have used McAfee but it wasn't great. I hear Norton is good, Kaspersky is good... what do you like best (even if it is not one just listed)?Snow Raver is correct.

However, I recommend Symantec for software protection against viruses.

And Malware Bytes for malware protection.

See links below:Literally all Anti-Virus software will be fine. As long as you update the virus database weekly, and run a scan 1-2 times a week you will be fine.

I use AVG Free 9.0 on my computer. There's a paid version that provides Phishing and other security features, but all of which are not needed. If you get the AVG Free version, you will be more than safe.

Update it often, and again, run scans whenever you're not using the computer.

Just remember, it is not a smart practice to have more than one Anti-Virus to be installed on your computer, because it's easier for viruses to slip by. When more than one is installed, the programs are kind of "competing" with one another. Hard to explain, just uninstall McAfee once AVG is on, or whatever you're using.

Hope it helps.

Geoff C
The best free tested Anti-Virus are Avast and Avira...compared to these mcafee, AVG and norton are junk (matousec.com) its also wise to have SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes for Spyware detection and removal...they work well together what one may miss the other can catch as they use different scanning methods...
After many years of using free A/V and anti malware I some months ago installed a Norton trial Internet security 2011on my daughters and granddaughters computers.I always felt Norton was a huge resource hog but the latest version was vastly improved. So much so that after three months I have installed it on my computer which seems considerably more responsive. My choice now until something better comes along.
The best virus protection is an educated user.
none, its a waste of system resources. i just use a router for its firewall and don't visit gnarly sites or open pop-ups.

Please help!!! i changed my password on my account and then forgot it.?

-so when i turn on my computer all of the accounts come up. and my account is the only computer administater account so i cant make any other accounts. please help! is there any way i can recover my password?Try this http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/

I think it resets your password, if it doesn't my bad but you will definitely be able to get into your computer with this program if you've forgotten your password.

Always create hints that only you will be able to understand with your passwordsType in some wrong password and Click Forgot my Password, the system will email you a few security questions and a reset link. make up a new password, I usually think of the same word when I try out a new one.

Tell me is this ok ......?

-if you give personal info to a hotel online. we were in a rush to find a hotel, but it was asking us for our personal info, if you wanted to request something. we didn't see that the "book now" button was above. anyway, our info is safe right???Honestly, probably not. But then "safe" is a relative term. First of all, such information is often sent in the clear. And unless you your remember there being an https:// type address or a little lock icon on the status bar (indications that you have an encrypted SSL connection), then the information can be seen by anyone along the route between your device and the hotel. Even if it is transmitted via an encrypted connection, it is unlikely that the information is encrypted on the hotel side. In my experience, most organizations have loads of people who can access such information even though they really don't have a need for it. As mentioned above, the hotel as an entity can pretty much do what they please with it; and unless there is a credit card or SSN involved, they are under no obligation to secure that information.

On the other hand, so much of that type information is flying around that it is very unlikely it will "come back to haunt you," as the expression goes. Even if they did compile and sell that information, it will probably just be used for targeted marketing.

The bottom line is that, you should always question the reason for being asked for personal information. And, if the information is required in order to move forward on some web form, there is nothing that says you can't lie.You may want to call the hotel and book a room. If you do that you can get the information of the person who you are talking to. So if your information is stolen, you can tell the authorities or the bank who handled your call.
The hotel can do whatever they want with the information you provided them with, and hackers could access it. Based on that, your information is not safe.

Have you ever cyber bullied someone before?

-Be truthful.Never have Cyberbullied, never will. It is immature and it is quite unkind to do so.Back in the day they use to call a cyber bully internet tough guy someone who made big threats he was going to do this and he was going to do that and that he was going to show up at someone's front door and punch them in the face or kick their *** and beat them up at their school.

Most internet tough guys are liars, and are actually angry, socially-awkward young skinny males who use the internet as a place to act tough because they can't pull it off in real life.

I've been online since the BBS days and 2400 Baud Modems believe me nothing has changed.
Never. truthfully, anybody who would cyber bully anybody are little punks who feel bad for themselves and they make themselves feel big, bad and powerful by cussing at a 13 year old kid online. Pathetic.
By cyberbullying, do you mean making someone look like a fool on the Internet? They started it. File a complaint:

I have not ever cyber bullied someone before.
If anyone says no, then he/she is a hypocrite and two-face. It is a fact!

My computer has a virus. how to get rid of it?

-hi, my old computer has a virus. it hasnt been used for a few years and is in need of upgrading. what parts in the computer can hold a virus? i know the HDD is infected so that will be replaced. also i will upgrade the RAM (i know the RAM cant hold a virus). but can anything else be infected that needs to be changed? it is old and will only be used for office work now, so i dont need anything fancy in it. thanks for any help!!It's worth doing a scan with malwarebytes before anything else. http://malwarebytes.org

You could also scan with adaware from lavasoft and spybot search and destroy, all the above are quality programmes and free. I would finish off with a registry clean using ccleaner. (just google them)

In most cases, you'll find that you don't have a virus, but have some kind of malware which the above will clear for you. Failing those, you could download an antivirus programme for free such as avira, but certainly run malwarebytes first.

Another option is to re-install the operating system.
If you are running Windows I have three solid virus protectors.

Microsoft Security Essentials (free)

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx

Avast Free

http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

Avira Free

http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus
A good antivirus program is "Microsoft security essentials" download that and scan your computer immediately, oh and it's FREE
If your replacing the most essential hardware then you have nothing to worry about.
scan with avg or avast
If the HDD is functioning, then it's you preference to replace it.

But THEN, your going to have to install a operating system.

Which it already has, only it needs help removing the bug.

I suggest following these procedures for virus removal.

What you are seeing there is the Link-Local IPv6 address, which is assigning an IP address for communication within the local subnetwork. These don't foreward packets in other words.

If you're interested in learning more about it you could start with the basics via Wikipedia,

Is MD5+Captca safe enough?

-Hello, I'm beginner in internet programming and I was wondering about encryptions. I read, that MD5 encryption is cracked easily, but is it safe enough, when there's a captca? If not, what kind of encryption do you propose?MD5 is not encryption. MD5 is a hash or message digest (md) algorithm.

Encryption is reversible using known processes.

An MD5 hash produces a standard output of the same size - whether you put in a two-line text file, or a DVD full of photos.

Because the size of the digest is the same, there are bound to be collisions.

Since you cannot directly go from MD5 to a definite plaintext, it is not encryption.

MD5 hashes are often used as a 'signature' to verify the contents of a file or set of files.

When I download the latest version of FluxBox, I want to make sure that nobody has tampered with the ISO I grabbed, and that I didn't get a corrupted file. I run my file through the MD5 algorithm, and compare my result to the published key. If they match, then I probably have a good set of files.

( The hash can be tampered with, too)

Captcha codes only try to verify that the user on the other end is human.

In turn, this prevents a computer script from using the resources behind ( protected by the captcha) it.

Captchas aren't perfect, some have been publicly broken, and others may already be broken but not public.

Basically, they take advantage of the fact that we are good at filling in missing info, and computers are not.

So, using a Captcha will slow down anyone who is attempting to access your resources, both by making them verify they are human each time, and by preventing a computer script from overwhelming your site.

Assuming that both MD5 and Captcha codes work as designed, you / we cannot define "safe enough" until you give us an idea of the application. What are you trying to protect, and why are you choosing these technologies rather than others?

.... If I was protecting my life savings, or a government installation - no MD5 and Captcha are not enough to ensure security.

.... If you are offering free downloads of programs that you created, and you have nothing else on your web server.. then, yes - captcha to make sure the user is human, and MD5 so the user can authenticate your program is not corrupted or changed.. that should be safe enough.

Which antivirus is better : Norton OR Mcafee ?

-they are both good ... But in my opinion norton is betterthey are both good ... But in my opinion norton is betternorton and mcafee are both junk programs...proven in comparison tests...(matousec.com) and other independant testers...Avast and Avira are free and far superior in detecting and removing viruses...dont go anywhere near AVG its no match for these 2 and a known resource hogger like norton...
Norton is significantly better.

Also disregard any comments you may get about Norton being a resource hog.

It was in the past, but not anymore.

You can get a free 30 day *fully-functional* trial of any Norton product from their home site to see if you like it before you buy it.

> Norton Trials: http://us.norton.com/downloads/trialsoft鈥?/a>
None of them those two are memory hoggs and they dont really protect you .Avast is the best ,the free version works better than most expensive brands..I know for experience and if you wanna backup your pc get an external Hard drive!
norton is good but uses a lot of system resources, so use avast.
I recommend Norton.
for ur 2 option norton is best.
I've used both, now I use Microsoft and their free e-mail service.

How do i reinstall Norton trail after trail period is out?

-Hi, so a while back i downloaded norton free trail 90days from tpb. Now my trail is over and i cant figure out if there is annyway to reactivate the trail. please help. i have done 90days trail on both NIS and NAVYou'd have to find and remove all of the corresponding registry keys...but that's not a task for the faint of heart: back up your registry before you try. Honestly though, just pay for it, it'll be worth it in the long run.
You cannot reactivate it. That is why it is a trial. You know have to pay if you still want to use Norton.
you cant reinstall them again for free trial usage again until you re-install your OS....its better that you use any free antivirus like AVIRA or AVG...or buy KASPERSKY....
Just buy it!

Confused on buying an antivirus?

-so here's the deal i'm confused im planning on buying this antivirus right so on the site it said

NOD32 Antivirus 4 3-User/1-Year ok but i dont get the 1 year part is the antivirus only gona work for one year or is it for the 3 users tat is gona work for 1 yearIt will work for three computers for one year, afterward you have to renew your license or you lose current protection.

My suggestion would be to ditch NOD32 and just download AVG 2011 free and install it on the computers. I've never had any issues when working with the free version of AVG.

I Think it will mean 3 users for a year, you don;t say your o/s I use windows7 and the free Microsoft Security Essentials which is very good, but don't know if this allowed on all windows systems, check it out

good luck..
I've used AVG Free for 6-7 years and never had any problems.

There is no reason to buy a bloated, complicated virus "suite" when much simpler software will do the same or a better job.

(Not to mention its free)
Correct. You will get 1 year for 3 users. Try Microsoft Security Essentials (its free)

Is Avast! Antivirus Freeware?

-I was told that Avast! is freeware but it asks for registration. I would like to know if it really is freeware and if it isn't, please tell me if there is a good AND free anti virus software.Yes for the basic set up it is free. You go on to the website and register then they send you a key (long number) which you then type in on home page and then you get free updates etc. I think you can install before you register and get a months use. Sorry but did this a while ago and have had free virus free use for about five years now. My company's IT Manager put me on to it so must be good. When I set up a new machine I usually have forgotten my registration number so apply for a new one, I think I have about five now!

Cheers Wiz.Yes, it is free. Registration is simple & you don't get bombarded with junk email. It's a good AV, I've been using it for years. Every now & then it will ask you if you want the Pro upgrade but it's no hassle to decline & just go on using it free.
Yes it's free. There is the free version and the one that costs. Make sure you get the free one on their site. I have the free version of Avast right now.
I had Avast on my old PC. It was free for a long time but not forever.

How can i tell if an email account is active. Also how can i tell if i have been spammed. I use the internet ?

-My mobile phone

Everytime I install a antivirus software I get a blue screen of death?

-Don't know what could be the cause of this..anyone have any ideas..I'm running windows xpYou may have a virus or Trojan that is blocking installation of new programs.

Try starting the PC in "Safe Mode With Networking". Then download and install MALWAREBYTES.

Run a full scan and it should remove the problem.

Safe Mode is entered by pressing the F8 key just after you turn on the comptuer, before windows loads.

The select SAFE MODE With Networking from the menu and press enter.
Download Microsoft Security Essentials from the Microsoft web site, but when it comes up to download the file choose run soft the Web site actually installs it for you. This may be a way around what ever is going on.
Make sure you have no other AV products on the computer...that will do it right there...also ...make sure when you download the AV product...its compatible with your OS Windows xp 32 or 64 bit.......
use a rescue disk of any good antivirus and do a full scan of your computer.

Firefox 5 keeps crashing and won't restart?

-We're sorry, Firefox had a problem and crashed, We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts.

To help us diagnose and fix the problem, you can send us a crash report.

But it won't restart, not when i restart my computer and nothing.if you are having problem with Firefox 5 uninstall it & use Firefox 6 beta version it's good oneIts trying to reopen a page that closed when firefox crashed, just try and start a new session. Or if that doesn't work, open task manager, and removed firefox.exe from the processes tab.
Turn off your computer, turn it back on. Then download a new browser: I recommend

How to install recycle bin?

I'm looking for an anti-virus for my new desktop immediately. Is it worth it to pay?

-I am thinking about either downloading a free version of Avast! or purchasing their maximum protection. Is there that much of a difference between the two?'Out-of-the-box' MS Windows absolutely reeks with security problems and bad configurations that average users are unaware of...and so the endless exploits and malware infections.

Avast! shows over 2.7+ million KNOWN malware code items. Unknown items certainly exist, and 'legit' services are becoming indistinguishable from malicious garbage.

You must reform your entire Windows strategy and tactics.

"10-Step Security"/PC World; http://www.pcworld.com/article/122500/10鈥?/a>

Even the most diligent & informed user, with layers of protection, smart user habits, solid system configurations & "real time" protection, risks infection. Check for fairly current threats here: http://www.computerworld.com/s/topic/new鈥?/a>

Stop using Internet Explorer!

It is the Undisputed World Heavyweight Champ @ passing malicious garbage.

Firefox, beefed up with these official Firefox Collection items, stops acres of malware seen here in Y! Answers:

"NoScript" will go a long way preventing "rogue" malware infections.

Turn off 3rd party assets:

鈻?amp; Un-Check 'Accept 3rd Party cookies'.

Use "Sandboxie": http://www.sandboxie.com/ for even better protection.

Core defense applications might include (but not limited to) a robust dedicated anti-virus (I make no recommendations).

Always incorporate a stout firewall: Some freeware is here: http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/securi鈥?/a>

Look them over and match your needs to skill level.

And, get this installed: 鈻?quot;HOSTS file" (from mvps.org) which blocks evil webpage assets from re-directs which install malware or trashware. (Vista requires special instructions; on-page link)

Most novice users and Windows fanboys do not like hearing this, but nonetheless, it's true: using Windows on the Internet, requires you to become a security EXPERT, it's that freekin' simple. Something they conveniently omit telling you when you buy this system...

Note that deliberate use of 'dark side' sites, porn, peer-2-peer, pirated music, movies, software, etc. will ultimately defeat ANY security barriers.

Making all these changes seems overwhelming, and it is a pain in the keester; but it MUST be done, and constantly tweaked...or stop using Windows on the Internet; move to Linux.
If you want free then I recommend Avast , superantispyware and Malwarebytes. coupled with Comodo firewall They are all free for personal use . It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.
Yes there is a difference. Free versions allow basic protection and full purchased versions would give you full protection from viruses and other bad stuff.
its better you dont install any antivirus then to bye Avast....If you want to bye then only and only go for Kaspersky Internet Security / Antivirus...or if you want any free then go for Avira or AVG....but never ever AVAST!!!!!
No there isn't. I've used the free version of Avast for an year and I've never had problems (instead of AVG Free).

You don't need the premium version ;)

My computer won't let me change my settings?

-I was trying to change what my settings were for when I close the lid to my laptop. Its currently set to sleep where as I want it to completely shut down. but it says those options aren't available for me and when I try to troubleshoot it says nothing is wrong...help?

How can I fix my computer?

-Recently I attempted to install Windows 7 on my computer which originally operated on Vista. But the installation froze in the middle. Now when I restart my computer, Windows fails to load. When it gives me the option to run from my Windows 7 disc, it always gets.an installation error. So my computer won't load at all. Is there anything I can do?you may have a dodgy disc of windows 7, one that just by chance doesnt work properly rather than you have a pirate. i would suggest wiping your harddrive and then starting again, but i cannot guarentee results and cant advice properly unless i can see what is going on with your computer for myself.

you could try and call microsoft on 0844 800 2400 if you are in the UK. be warned it is about 5p per minute with a connection charge because of the 0844. also i think office hours are 9-5 monday - friday

oh also if you do have a pirate then dont call microsoft, obviously, just throw the disc away and buy another copy
re-install it

I need help regarding my computer..! urgent help required?

-okay so awhile ago i was using the computer and thought of transferring a movie from the pc to the laptop via a pen drive however before actually loading up the pen drive on the pc i did a manual virus scan and it showed up nothing so thinking that it was all safe to go ahead i opened up the pen drive contents and proceeded to delete everything that was already in there to make some space for my movies...however when i selected everything at once a window popped up saying if i would like to select the hidden files as well and then it gave me directions on how to view those hidden files...after following those steps i found some pretty weird named files, first instinct in my mind was virus files so i deleted everything at ones including the files already had on my pen however still wondering why my antivirus didnt manage to pick it up! and now the problem seems to be is that my keyboard has stopped working and everytime i press a key it gives me an error sound and when i select something on the desktop or try to open one of the icons from the desktop bar it just wont open and everything on the desktop gets selected at once! tried using the keyboard to surf the net aswell but it just wouldnt work...i really dont know whats going on with my computer..any help? please!!hidden files dont mean virus.if the antivirus didnt find anything im sure it was fine.should have just chose to format the drive.as for the keyboard and mouse issue try doing a system restore see if it helps.have you restarted system since this started?

If an answer was reported and then I appealed it, what is the process?

-I answered a question, and it was very nicely worded, I even suggested that she volunteer for her cause and the answer was reported. I appealed it, and have never heard an answer one way or another. The question that was asked has been deleted. This was a week ago. What is the process and how do you know if the answer was deemed okay or not?I had one deleted almost 2 weeks ago that there was nothing wrong with at all. You have to remember this place is full of all kinds of malicious people. They will report an answer just for the heck of it. Some will report an answer because they know it's right but they don't want you to know it. In other words, My answer was deleted because I told this person to use rkill before using malware bytes. Anybody who knows anything about computers knows that some malicious processes will stop malware bytes from opening or updating. Rkill kills these processes so malware bytes can work. Someone reported it as spam. Someone didn't want this person to know about rkill.

Yahoo answers isn't what it use to be. It will not be long before Answers will go the way 360 did. They did away with Yahoo 360 because of all the spammers and worse that were using it. Answers is on its way to the same fate. Eventually they will tire of all the crap they have to put up with and shut it down. Use to if you appealed you would hear back in 24 to 48 hrs. Now, You might and you might not. It's coming. They are getting tired of dealing with it.If the question was deleted, then the process ended. The answer is not counted as positive or negative so the answer is not deemed good or bad one way or another. The only points that you received for the answer are the two points that you received for answering the question in the first place.
If the question was deleted then your answer can't be restored if the appeal is successful. If that is the case, nothing happens. It becomes a non issue.

~

Most appeals only tale 2 or 3 days. You will get an answer yes or no by then unless the question was deleted.

If the answer was deleted you should treat the appeal as successful and forget about it.
I had one last week, and I appealed and told them as is, and asked them what the hell is wrong with my question, and 2 days later they replied and apologized, problem with Yahoo is they dont even read the question answers, and take the reporter's word at face value.
Yahoo seems to ignore a lot of them lately. Try sending one to y_answrs_team@yahoo.com

Antivirus/Malware Questions?

-I have a few questions, all related I suppose. Pardon the format please, I dont really know how to ask them.

So...What sort of virus removal and hard-drive "clean-up" software do commercial computer geek places use? Is this stuff available to the consumer? Why not? If my Malware and Antivirus software (or is "utility" the proper term?) get regular updates, why cant it catch everything out there? If I run my Cleaners every few days, why did the Computer Shop remove sooooo much crap from my hard-drive? I use ATF and CC Cleaners & Malwarebytes and Avast antivirus. Is this stuff any good?

I let my kids and their friends use my computer this past weekend, now I think it has a virus. I turned my computer on today after work and it said it had to install 35 upgrades. It "configures" itself every time it starts now. I'm sure I have a virus. Last time this happened the computer place charged $155. Ugghhh. Here is a list of software that we would use when removing a virus from a customers computer,

http://www.gl-computers.co.uk/free-articles/the-best-free-virus-removal-tools-available-on-the-internet
Viruses are very harmful rouge programs that are put on a person's computer. It can be added just by going on a website that is unsafe. Contrary to common belief, you don't have to download anything to get a virus. You just have to download a cookie or cache from the site. Viruses can cause permanent damage to your home computer. They can also take vital information and passwords from your computer. The worst viruses will take money from virtual banking programs. They will also take credit cards information from your virtual banking accounts or orders from websites. When a virus is on your computer, you are going to be scared the first time. Really, it is never your fault. You have no proof that you got a virus from a certain website. Even if you know, you did not want it on your computer. You want to delete the virus within 2 hours of getting it on your home computer. below will be virus removal information.

Fixing Registry Problems Fixing registry problems.

To Repair problems that viruses may have left behind, you want to copy and paste the code below into Notepad ad save it as Fix.REG.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\鈥?

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\鈥?

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\鈥?

"exefile"=hex(0):

Double click it and it should fix some problems.

3. Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

4. Microsoft security essentials: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_鈥?/a>

5. Microsoft Security essential standalone sweeper: http://connect.microsoft.com/systemsweep鈥?/a>

Step 3: Run a virus scan with the anti-virus or Malware Remover. This will take anywhere from 10 minutes to a few hours. It is all worth it at the end.

Step 4: If it detects viruses, remove the ones it tells you you have. You will have to restart your computer at this point.

If worse comes to worse:

You have three options when all else fails...

1. Buy a new computer

2. Reinstall Windows

3. Have it fixed by a professional

I will teach you how to do option 2.

Option 2 is the last option. Please, Back up all important data before reinstall windows.

Safe way to reinstall windows:

How to install Windows vista:

1. Commercial computer geek places use the same software that they sell off there shelves. No difference. But increasingly, they simply format the hard drive and re-install Windows...takes little skill (cheap labor) an returns a huge profit. No comebacks either.

2. Your typical anti-virus software can catch about 95% of older malware, of the type that nobody sees much of anymore. But that figure drops to somewhere around 50% for brand new malware...it can take days or sometimes weeks for a new malware to get into an anti-virus database...and there are hundreds, maybe thousands of new threats each and every day. Think about it...anti-virus software can't catch what it doesn't know about. (Oh it trys with generic and heuristic detection schemes, but these are not very effective.).

3. While updating is extremely important, zero-day" malware exploits un-patched vulnerabilities BEFORE they are patched.

4. These "cleaners" seldom do a lot of good performance-wise (I do use CCleaner occasionally). They were useful when everyone was using 10-20 GB hard drives, not so much now that 1 TB drives are becoming the norm.

5. Avast and MBAM are both very good free products.

6. Kids...the malware industries best friend....they use advanced social engineering techniques to trick the computer illiterate and the naive into willingly allowing the downloading and installation of malware...no amount of updating or anti-virus will be at all useful in this case.

Regarding computer security, what is a keylogger?

-Ive been reading questions on here in Security and that word comes up a lot. By context Im guessing its got something to do with bootup. Is that right?A keylogger is something which records the keys you press. It's often used by hackers to get passwords etc.

Not something you want.No. A keylogger is software that you install on someone else's computer (or on a shared computer), that is not detectable by regular processes (so it's stealthy) and that will email you daily report of all keystrokes on that computer. So you can read other people's emails, chats, URL's, passwords, etc.
Keyloggers often 'install' before the OS (Windows for instance) gets 'booted' (running).

That means every key you touch is copied to a hidden file, and at whatever time it's set for: sends those files to a 'mothership' for further analysis (by bots usually).

They can also take 'screenshots' and have pixel location aspects, which show even more of what you're doing, so 'on-screen' keyboards (mouse letter selection) are a moot tactic against them.
A key logger is a root kit/malware that affects your PC and its mostly starts a system startup,For example if you login to mail.yahoo.com your username and password will be saved which can be seen by a hacker. To prevent such type of keyloggers antivirus cant help you need a software called Key-scrambler get it here- http://www.qfxsoftware.com/

Hope it helped.
A keylogger is just like a hidden camera in a room, which records every activity, regarding computer it is a kind of software which records the data of every single button pressed.
A keylogger is used to monitor you're keystrokes by an attacker when you enter passwords etc.

Would you trust this website when purchasing something?

-Hello, I am after purchasing an XBOX 360 off this website. However should they be trusted as the are cheaper than any other? I have looked at the payment options and they appear to be reputable companies. Would you trust this website? Please click link and have a look and advise me?http://multizoneav.eu/product/microsoft-x360-250gb-console/i'd trust.

but think about web-prepared credit card (ask your bank to make a simple account 鈥?you'd get a web-prepared credit card 鈥?on which you'd transfer money you need for certain internet shopping) so you'd be sure no one can't spend all your money from your bank account.

I lost my wifi password?

-Is there anyway i can get it back?Reset the router, most have the key written on the back or bottom, if not it will be unsecured (blank) so just set up one of your choice following the usual rules WPA, mix of cases, symbols, not dictionary words.Use WirelessKeyView.

It's a CNET Download, so you know it's safe.

Of course, this all depends on if you've logged onto it from that computer before. If not, you may have to load a Linux distro like BackTrack and use Aircrack-NG, if it's WEP.
Alternative is to restore the router to factory settings, so you'll have the default password again. But then you'ld have to set it up again from scratch.
If it's a BT hub its on the back x

How do I reset an administrator password?

-Ok I have a Windows computer and when I try to download League Of Legends it wants my dad's password. He doesn't care that I play this game he is just at work. I need to reset the password so I can play it. Please help me.This could be in only Windows XP, but this is definitely worth a shot. (It should work in 7, never tried tho)

- Open up Start Panel

- Go to run and type in cmd (In windows 7 just type in cmd on the search files and programs)

- A big black box will appear on the screen

- Type in: Net User

- A list of all user accounts will appear on the screen, and you should see Admin or Administrator

- Type in: Net Admin (Or Net Administrator, whichever it says..you should use)

- You should then see settings for the Admin Account

- Type in: Net User Admin(istrator) *

- It will ask you to enter a password, followed by a confirmation password

*Note: when you type the password, you will not see anything being typed..its normal. Just type it*

- Password should then be changed, now restart your computer.

Also...if its not an Admin account, and its your dad's...go ahead and use like Net User Dad for the command entries.

Hope all this helps.

How can I know someone turned my computer on and used it?

-I'm expecting someone is going to run my laptop and steal or delete some videos, pictures and so on, I thinks there is a way to know the time when my laptop was on, and what has been done, can someone show me how to discover that? I'm using window 7.Yes, and this service is called Event Viewer. You can find it like so:

Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Event Viewer. Click on System Log.
Just set a boot password to prevent even booting your laptop without your permission, but just make sure to memorize it)), and set a password to your account and nobody will definitely use it
look at the security logs in the event viewer. This will show you what user logged on and when. Also, you should password protect the laptop so this doesn't happen again
Well you could check your history and also just set a password so it doesn't happen again

Bad virus on computer. Can't use system restore. Trying to format.?

-no idea how i got this virus. I haven't downloaded anything and wasn't on any sites. Then all of a sudden it came up with "avast is infected " then what i'm guessing is a fake "shield pro" thing came up and started scanning my computer, and the desktop went blue. system restore is blocked and just wont open and so is anything else i try from windows. I have a format floppy disk but i disconnected that drive ages ago. I'm trying to just install XP again to see if it overwrights it but it's just asking which partition i want to use, then when i select it it's saying there's already a system on there. Can someone give me a solution? I don't mind if i lose everything there's nothing i wanna keep anyway. I'm just worried it's got my bank passwords or any online account passwords. In the installation screen where you choose the hard disk, there should be a little eraser icon on the bottom of the window that says format, click it and everything will be erased, then just install windows anew.
If you really want a 100% clean system you should reformat it. Otherwise, try AVG 2011 or other anti-virus software but it may or not give you a 100% clean system
A clean installation consists of removing all data from your hard disk by reformatting your hard disk and reinstalling the operating system and programs to an empty (clean) hard disk.

To boot from your CD/DVD, the BIOS settings on your computer must be configured to do this. On start up keep tapping either F1, F2, F10,(Be Aware that some manufacturers use F10 for system recovery!) Esc, or Del, to enter the BIOS set-up. Look for "Drive configuration", "Boot order" or similar and make the CD/DVD drive the first boot device and the hard drive second. Save settings and exit.

Insert the CD/DVD into your CD/DVD drive, and then restart your computer.

When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start the computer from the CD/DVD.

Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format (NTFS) a partition where you want to install Windows.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Windows Setup.

If you can still use the internet then try this on-line scanner which is free, or it seems the free trial is free :

http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner.

Or on start up continually click F8 on to get into "safe mode with networking" and download Malawrebytes free version:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/mal鈥?/a>

Then update it if necessary and run a scan. If you can`t download it on your desktop then download it on another machine, put it on a usb stick and then plug the stick into your desktop and run it that way.

One of those options should work. Reinstall is the last option I would think.

Hope that helps you, Bob.
Avast is worse than useless. If you can, download Microsoft's free AV. See link.
