-if you give personal info to a hotel online. we were in a rush to find a hotel, but it was asking us for our personal info, if you wanted to request something. we didn't see that the "book now" button was above. anyway, our info is safe right???Honestly, probably not. But then "safe" is a relative term. First of all, such information is often sent in the clear. And unless you your remember there being an https:// type address or a little lock icon on the status bar (indications that you have an encrypted SSL connection), then the information can be seen by anyone along the route between your device and the hotel. Even if it is transmitted via an encrypted connection, it is unlikely that the information is encrypted on the hotel side. In my experience, most organizations have loads of people who can access such information even though they really don't have a need for it. As mentioned above, the hotel as an entity can pretty much do what they please with it; and unless there is a credit card or SSN involved, they are under no obligation to secure that information.
On the other hand, so much of that type information is flying around that it is very unlikely it will "come back to haunt you," as the expression goes. Even if they did compile and sell that information, it will probably just be used for targeted marketing.
The bottom line is that, you should always question the reason for being asked for personal information. And, if the information is required in order to move forward on some web form, there is nothing that says you can't lie.You may want to call the hotel and book a room. If you do that you can get the information of the person who you are talking to. So if your information is stolen, you can tell the authorities or the bank who handled your call.
The hotel can do whatever they want with the information you provided them with, and hackers could access it. Based on that, your information is not safe.
